Reboot: The Guardian Code

Hello everyone.

Older members of the French Code Lyoko community, who were around when the series started airing, will remember a time historians once called, "Le péril ricain," or "The American peril." Indeed, during the era of season 2 and all the way through season 4, a number of rumours spread about the will of the Americans and Cartoon Network purchasing the Code Lyoko licence. At the time, we all trembled as we imagined the effects of clichéed Americanisation on our truly French cartoon, with Yumi going up 3 bra sizes and Aelita being renamed Kimberley.
That never came to pass and if memory serves, the last episodes of season 4 of Code Lyoko were never even aired on CN because of a "commercial disagreement."

Later on, following the end of the series, many thought that the series may one day be taken up by Americans... We only got Code Lyoko Evolution.
Even later on, I long thought that CL's great success would one day in 2030 lead to a reboot or a continuation of the series by Americans or someone else...

What nobody saw coming was that the Americans would take the series up again someday...its content...its concept...its characters... But under another name, so as not to confuse copyrights or intellectual properties.

Indeed, we're here today to announce the upcoming release of a Netflix series which seems, not to be a continuation, but to be a reboot/complete rip-off of Code Lyoko under another name. Here are some details on it:

(This first bit will be treated a little lightly. Unlike Moonscoop or Dargaud, we don't answer to Netflix, so we can finally let loose a little and call them out on their crap! A more formal analysis will come at the end of the article, after the video).

This series is called, "Reboot: The Guardian Code."
The title already sounds familiar.

A quick overview of the synopsis:
“Four teenagers at Alan Turing High School are recruited by V.E.R.A, a "virtual evolutionary recombinant avatar," to protect cyberspace”

In it, we find teenagers attending a "school specialising in computing technology."
On a casting level, we've got: a black guy (black Ulrich), a comic relief character... (In the end, there's only Yumi who seems to be missing, logically replaced by a blonde girl who takes selfies).

They meet a virtual artificial intelligence (well then...). She ends up arriving at their school in flesh and blood (Oh...).

But before that, she trains them to defend the virtual world (!!!)...
To do this, they use a very simple process: virtualisation. (You may think that it's performed differently to in Code Lyoko, but....no!).
Once in the virtual world, you'll find out heroes in their virtual outfits with superpowers (On my mother's life!). But because Cyberspace is vast, they also need to explore a place that looks a lot like a certain global network, like two peas in a pod.

They fight different threats on the world, spawned by the malicious virus created by an evil computer genuis hidden in the shadows behind his screen.

I think we've arrived at the stage where you should believe me a lot more, so here's the video trailer:

Back to a more pragmatic view.

Effectively, at first sight, this trailer seems to be a mix of 70% Code Lyoko, 20% Tron and 10% Iron Man. To an extent that with serious reservations, it's incredible to wonder how far Netflix will go before they're afraid of a plagiarism lawsuit.

However... This series, as its name indicates, is a reboot. But it's not a reboot of our cartoon, rather another cartoon called, "ReBoot".

If that doesn't mean anything to you, that's normal.
It was a Canadian cartoon aired between 1994 and 2001. It was broadcast in the country of the maple leaf. It tried to spread to the USA, but it had very little success due to competition between the big animation channels. It then tried to export across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom, but it was very quickly censored due to complaints from parents who thought the cartoon and its characters were too violent and crude for their young children.
So in the end, it retained very limited notoriety among cartoon lovers. Here is its synopsis:

"The story takes place inside a computer. Bob is a Guardian who is charged with maintaining the security of the Mainframe system, in which can be found a virus named Megabyte. The virus tries at all costs to infiltrate the SuperComputer, another much more powerful system that Bob originally comes from, in order to infect it. Bob also has allies in the form of Dot Matrix (a young woman who manages a large part of the system and is at the head of the restaurant Dot's Diner), his particularly reckless little brother Enzo who's always accompanied by his dog Frisket, and Phong the "old sage." They do all they can to fight against Megabyte's offensives, but also to take part in games hosted by the user of the system, which manifest as violet cubes that fall from the "sky," and in which they must battle the user at all costs: if they lose the round, they will be deleted and will provoke the destruction of a sector of the Mainframe."

The new series you just watched the trailer for was pitched in 2013, commissioned by Netflix in 2015, filmed in 2017 and will release on the 30th of March 2018 on Netflix.
It will be both a reboot and a continuation (in the style of Code Lyoko Evolution) that notably ignores the fact that the fourth and final season of the original cartoon ended on a cliffhanger.
So, the new series may both continue the cartoon (yet to be seen!) and renovate the concepts of the series universe. It will keep the old characters from the cartoon and introduce new ones. However, visually, in the reboot, we can't help but notice that they've borrowed extremely notable elements from other series, notably Tron and Code Lyoko... The new series is indeed very far from the original cartoon, visually speaking...

Now... How should one react?

-    First of all, if you're not afraid of huge American clichés (because even the opening swamped us) and if the theme of the battle between humanity and cyperspace is still a passion of yours, throw yourself into this series.
-    If you're more outraged like the CL.fr writing team, you can watch the first few episodes and see if our first prejudices are true or not.
-    In a lighter manner, you can also content yourself with looking at this series in a more curious manner: indeed, due to its format, the series will address an older audience and as a result, it's possible that a number of "taboos" of the Code Lyoko cartoon in terms of humour, romantic relationships, etc...will be touched on in this series, and that it will include gags or lines that we'd hoped to see at the time of Code Lyoko.

As for us, we'll remain prudent but we'll try to keep an open mind about this little series, and maybe we'll end up doing some more extensive work on it. We'll see...

To be continued...
On March 30th! Only on Netflix!

Death of Carlo de Boutiny

Hello everyone.

Those of you who are better connected will already have heard the news, especially those who are following Thomas Romain on Twitter. One of the fathers of Code Lyoko passed away last week. It was Carlo de Boutiny, whose name appears in all the openings of Code Lyoko.
This man was a writer for cinema and although he wasn't very well known to the LyokoSphere in the end, he guided the young Tania and Thomas at the end of their studies and helped them to take the first steps in the Garage Kids/Code Lyoko project.

Here are two links to Tweets by Thomas Romain on the subject:

https://twitter.com/Thomasintokyo/status/959367229480493056 "We developed the CODE LYOKO project together in 2001. With great sadness I've just learned that my friend Carlo de Boutiny has left us. As well as being a formidable person, Carlo was a talented writer. I miss his words."

https://twitter.com/Thomasintokyo/status/959755987119874049
"The Code Lyoko project was initiated by Tania Palumbo and myself just after we left animation school. Carlo, who had his origins in cinema, brought us his writing experience. He did a lot of work with the director Jan Kounen."

They'll be unveiled during the course of December across social networks.
Also, one version, number 355 currently, is planned for early 2018, with - eventually-, a trailer for this christmas.

10 years later... Scripts vs Episodes seasons 1-4!

Hello everyone!

Some Code Lyoko news! What an emotional sequence...

Today, the site team is mostly busy managing the inescapable passage of the end of study, going out and looking for their first job and a happy future. But that doesn't stop us from continuing to keep an ear out for series news, content and community.

Like all good artists, we're therefore looking to fill a few remaining gaps on CodeLyoko.Fr. No, we're not going to create a v6 and no, we're not going to move the site to HTTPS or rework the forum.

However, we're tirelessly working to fix the rare gaps in our content… And the people who know the site well enough may be able to see what we're getting at here. (If not, you might just need to read the title of this news post…)

After some long investigations, a large campaign of correspondence with different people and a little boost from a certain Bérik, we have finally managed to get our hands on the scripts for season 4 of Code Lyoko.

As a bit of history, the scripts for the episodes from seasons 1 to 3 were sent to us by Sophie Decroisette each time an episode came out. Suddenly, at the start of season 4, Moonscoop decided that it had to stop: it was obvious that some fans preferred to read the episode script instead of watching the episode on TV or buying the DVD… May they rest in peace. So, we had to cut our losses with season 4.

As for Evolution's scripts, we slyly made off with them thanks to our connections with certain members of the film crew and actors.

Today, 10 years after the end of season 4 (10 November 2007), we have managed to acquire these highly prized production documents. Although, unfortunately, our contact was able to send us all the scripts except for a single episode. So the only one we're now missing is the script of episode 91 "Bad Connection". If somebody ever finds it at an auction…

In conclusion of all this chatter (Did I lose you?)
The scripts can be downloaded through the Episode Guide or the Conceptual Documents page. (If you look at the Conceptual Documents page, you can also see another project I'm working on, just beneath the scripts! - Queen)

But that's not all…
Because we do our jobs well, we have waited several months before releasing the scripts, and we - notably Dude Dudu - have taken the time to update our huge, gargantuan and world-exclusive file, "Scripts to episodes comparison".

This file is a must-read for all fans of the series, showing the most remarkable changes between the paper version of the episode (writer's scripts) and the result shown on TV (after it's gone through the production pipeline). It has a homepage with a top 10, and then several pages going over each episode to compare the changes that occurred to each one.

After our update, the
top 10 became a top 12 most notable changes, adding what are, in our opinion, the two most interesting changes of season 4.
The list of Jim's jobs mentioned only in the scripts also gains an additional entry.
And obviously, two pages listing all the modifications in season 4 have appeared in the file:
 [Page 1 - Ep. 66 to 80] [Page 2 - Ep. 81 to 95]

And yes, it's all in English! Seasons 1 to 4 (but not Evolution) of the Scripts vs Episodes file have all been translated and you can now read them at your leisure.

Have a nice read!

Thanks to Queen and Nelbsia for the two illustrations for the top 12, and for continuing to answer our call even 10 years later…
Finally, Immu and the rest of the team will continue to "celebrate" the 10 years since the end of the series with a few other small news articles throughout the month of November, so keep checking back to CodeLyoko.fr!

IFSCL 3.5.0: Trailer

Hello everyone, the Fictional Interface of Code Lyoko's Supercomputer (IFSCL) is back!

After 7 years of waiting, 7 long years of fans constantly asking for him, he's here, beautiful and new in the latest IFSCL trailer:

By the way, about xanafied costume: simply put I consider william 'Xanafied clothes' to be its regular S4 clothes (that he would have had even without xanafication, xana just pushed the upgrade button earlier than jeremy did for his other classmates). So white ones are considered to season 3 clothes. I've just made them early but they won't appear yet. So there’s no original dedicated ‘xanafied costumes design’ for lyoko warriors.

Enjoy!

Big recap on the fangames!

Hello Lyokofans!
It's time to make a summary of the three non official fangames that I'm (Immu) creating for this wonderful community:

To start up with the most popular, the IFSCL 3.4.2 can be downloaded :

The clock, more realtime than ever!
A common program that appears at rares moments in the series more precisely when Yumi is busy defending "Mélanie", the Skidladnir still under construction.
However there was no need less for the program to become an essential component to IFSCL, and not the least. It can control time!

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

You won't have to wait 10 min for an automatic attack of Xana anymore, now it can rest for many hours or even days like in the series, and like the game runs in real time, so you can accelerate time to the next attack of Xana!
One more thing: the clock show also the time display of the virtualisation of the LyokoWarriors (a minimum of 12 hours mostly explicit in the original series ( confirm in CLE). but also the recompilation times of certain programs like the reboot, Return to the past, or the overvehicles.

Because lets face it. there has to be a reason for Jeremy to not use them all the time,so why the programs should not "re-agree" to the digital world every time?
It seems a relevant question for me !

Lot of fixes and improvements
We can note that the window of anomaly can now be narrowed and show the reall reason of the error.
With that we can also note that they will be more strategy at the end of the game, but others will come in the future

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

But mostly a big work on the windowss,it illuminates, have a beautifull black border and dont have anymore the problem when we click on the button and we want to slide on the screen.
And finaly, a dynamic help, a true successor of the other iterations that have been created on IFSCL in the course of his production (separate pdf, separete link, ingame windows with compressed images..)

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

Immu's Room introducing the Cathedral & the inventory
Teased for a month accross social medias and enigmatic clues, 340 & 342 Immu's Room has been unveiled.
You'll find the 3D cathedral of Code Lyoko's factory, a prelude to IFSCL story mode.
Also many other clues can be find inside, which are linked to IFSCL's future.

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

The inventory, while not being very interactive at that moment, is also an early taste of the story mode, in which every item collected in game can have a use.
Around 40 objects are planned, from the most weird but very true to the series, (orange and black soda can) to the most obvious ones (cd of aelita's materialization, Franz Hopper's suitcase...).

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

And as a bonus, two fan videos regarding IFSCL Immu's Room and a retrospective for the other.
They're in french, but we're still not having much video like that in english, so don't hesitate to participate by creating your own theory videos or analysis in english!

Some notes about this version

There's no perfect version, but this one is really clean of any big issue.
The only little things to know are : kiwi window command won't work so simply use the search button on the upper part of the interface.
There's currently no gameover if aelita ends up not being rematerializable before the end of a Xana earth Attack.

IFSCL 342 ScreenIFSCL 342 Screen

Also, we are stuck if the vehicles cannot be rematerialized while we are in celestial dome or lyoko's core/heart.
Those two situations will respectively be resolved by a one-way secret passage in the core that will lead to arena, and a special program in celestial dome interface to quickly recompile a vehicle.

Two more IFSCL versions planned till the end of the year
So that 3.5.0, planned for october/november has the goal to bring us William but also to the xanafication of lyokowarriors by the scyphozoa and the whole management of creation/destruction of the sectors.
While that for 3.7.0, which target Christmas 2017, that one will have the hard task to introduce the skidbladnir and the digital sea (but not yet the replikas).
I put every effort possible so that translators, beta testers and I will allow 2018 to be under the sign of the 'story mode'.

Let's not forget one of IFSCL little brothers: Lyoko Conquerors : The Online Wars
Also created by your dedicated fangame creator, this ambitious online real time strategy game based on Xana and William is still in production within two IFSCL work periods.
You can see its progression by checking the links in the progression log ;)

Code Lyoko on YouTube and Dailymotion

Hello everyone!

It's summer, it's school holidays (for the lucky few) and like every other summer, each moment of rest is spent outside or staying at home binge watching TV series, for example. For those who prefer the latter idea and who are fans of Code Lyoko (surprising for someone on codelyoko.fr Surpris), Dargaud offers you the entire series for free on the official Code Lyoko YouTube channel (in other words, the only channel where Code Lyoko episodes are officially available  Clin d'oeil). This channel, opened two years ago, has published new episodes every week until recently finishing with the release of episode #95 - Echoes. On your phone, tablet or television, you no longer have any excuse not to watch a good little episode. What? You'd rather watch with the original French voices rather than the English? No problem! The episodes are also available in French. No excuse, I tell you!

Huh? You...what? You're...anti-YouTube? It was better before? When the more successful video platform was Dailymotion? NO PROBLEM! The episodes are also available on Dailymotion. When we say that everything has been planned out...

Well...to summarise, here are the Code Lyoko episodes available:

There, now nobody misses out.
Have a nice evening on co...what was that?
And for those who...don't want to see the episodes...in English...or in French?
...
Ok, two things:
1) It's summer, get some sunshine!
2) I see...anyway I present to you the children of the official channels, I call them:

There you have it, for other languages, reread step 1) and if not, you know what you have to do: watch and rewatch the episodes as you please indefinitely! =D

Have a nice holiday on codelyoko.fr Clin d'oeil (and it's not necessary to click the "Lire la suite" ("Continue reading") link, you'll find the exact same news :p)

Hello everyone,
The Fictional Interface of Code Lyoko's Supercomputer is back!
After celebrating the 7th anniversary of the game last 13th of april et the reveal of the orange return to the past, it's now time to give news about the 3.4.0 version trought a trailer and exclusive informations!

  • Version details
It's the big return of the fifth sector (namely confused as Carthage) lastly seen in IFSCL 2.6.2, but now in 3D!
And it's bringing a lot of new windows (heart, core, transporter... ) several being adaptated for more interesting gameplay (sensors etc..).
The original movement system for the maze has been added, that can be apparented to some sort of pacam, more logic considering what we saw in the series.
The key also changes from position on each new maze opening, and be aware of the countdown! (available in two versions so that everyones happy)

IFSCL 340 ScreenIFSCL 340 Screen

It's also the cloning, window that is added, with high 3D, textured and animated model!
By the way, all the 3D models of the characters have been improved, and are of course visible in virt, scan and analysis type of windows
There's also the elevator window! This time directly linked to its 3D counterpart, you'll be able to hear it working just like in reality!

This is also the return of the guardian and the scyphozoa, two units particularly useful that Xana will deploy when one of your lyokowarrior is alone...
Also keep in mind that scyphozoa is partially finished for this version, as xanafication will come for 3.5.0 with everything it involves!

IFSCL 340 ScreenIFSCL 340 Screen

  • A whole new mystery!
Some of those mysteries are still unresolved since last trailers, a breach in a wall, a weird eye, and now what you saw at the end of the trailer above...
Everything will be revelead in time, the majority being part of the story mode, coming in 2018. By the meantime, make your theories!
For the orange return to the past, it won't be available in next version, but don't worry, the Immu's Room will still present you other elements of the future of the IFSCL.

  • And after 19th of July 2017...
Will there be other versions of IFSCL this year? Yes! And pretty quick actually considering how much time is left.
We're slowly coming to sector's destruction, William, an update to battle system (action choice directly in the window itself) the Skidbladnir and the Digital Sea!

The current objective is about finishing all those groundwork trough 2 versions (3.5.0 and 3.6.0) that would be released in the upcoming months, in order to start 2018 directly on the story mode!
Of course, most the work was already started since years, that's why so much can start to go out so close from 3.4.0  ;)

IFSCL 340 ScreenIFSCL 340 Screen

Just like last 20th of November at trailer's release, rendez vous in one month for the release of IFSCL 3.4.0!

Many other things have been added/fixed, check the progression log for live infos about that.

Hello everyone!

Despite the years that have passed since the end of the cartoon, Code Lyoko continues to be appreciated by many as a quality cartoon and a nostalgic childhood memory.
This is why a YouTube channel that creates videos themed on cartoons has leaned towards our baby. The channel is called Channel|Frederator and its thematic videos are based and titled on the theme "107 Facts You Should Know About...".

As the model becomes more and more popular on YouTube, the channel creates videos about cartoons and asks its subscribers to propose the subject of the next video in the comments.
And so, after numerous requests from the English-speaking audience, on the 10th of May, the channel finally released "107 Facts You Should Know About Code Lyoko".

A number of things resonated with us in this video:
- Firstly, this video paints the history of Code Lyoko across the board: its origins, sources of inspiration, Code Lyoko, Code Lyoko Evolution, the actors, goodies, community life, etc... The video leads us in a very nostalgic thematic cruise that will revive a lot of small memories linked to the series.
Evidently, however, if you're a really dedicated fan and have followed and read this entire website, you'll learn next to nothing...

- ...despite our decades of research and writing, the author(s) managed to find facts or supply analyses on certain points that we've never touched on CodeLyoko.fr. There aren't many of them, but nonetheless: hats off to you!
Still should be noted that there are some errors among the 107 facts (like point 15 for example, showing Evolution concept sketches while discussing the Garage Kids concept art).

- We note the mention, throughout the 107 facts, of projects that our site hosts or is partners with. One good homage is given to Immu's IFSCL, our fantranslation project of the Code Lyoko Chronicles receives a good report (What about Keppsa's one...?) and our cosplayers from old Japan Expos are also given a mention.

- Also, we regrettably see a few redundancies in these facts. Indeed, some of the more repetitive facts could have been combined with others, allowing for funnier ones to take their place (like the parallel between the Subsonics and the trio of éminence grises from the series.)

- Finally, we enormously appreciate seeing the creators of the video have used CL.fr as a source of information: some facts directly concern the site's projects, and their pages appear in the video. Notably our file on the differences between the scripts and episodes! (And by the way, the season 1 pages have now been translated into English! Go check them out!)
Though we regret the absence of any credit to us in the end, we can clearly see that for some facts, some drawings from our artists (requested to illustrate our files) appear in the video. This is extremely gratifying for all the people who have worked on the site at any level (office and workshop!) to see that years after, our work continues to serve people and the site retains its role of the most complete and rich encyclopaedia on the series, despite being fanmade on a volunteer basis.

Well, I've said enough. Enjoy the video!
